Banyeres del Penedès
Banyeres del Penedès is located in the centre of Baix Penedès and the Penedès depression, between mountain ranges Litoral and Prelitoral. The terrain is slightly wavy and drained by Banyeres creek bed, and its flow is irregular. In the north, the creek bed from Llorenç comes together with Banyeres creek bed, and the majority of town is located on the top of an aquifer, which makes the village rich in groundwater.
The first news of Priorat de Banyeres dates from the 13th century, although the first document of the village is from 938. In the city centre, direction to the north, there’s remains from the vigilance tower,
which is located in pic del Puig (172m), her basement is circular, it’s made of irregular blocks of stone and it is 12m in height. In his heritage, one of the most important elements is the hermitage of Santa Maria del Priorat, which firstly only had the main nave, and later it was put in another nave with an apse, in the transition to Gothic. In the 60’s was discovered, in Les Masies de Sant Miquel, a necropolis from the 6th to 5th centuries b.C. In other places, it had founded some roman remains, and in 1998 it was discovered an important archaeological site which was from the 3rd century b.C., which was recognized as Bé Cultural
d’Interès Nacional, because it’s believed that it’s the crucial centre of eastern cossetania.
