Víctor Balaguer Library Museum
Established by the Catalan writer and politician Víctor Balaguer i Cirera, this museum library opened its doors on 26 October 1884. It is one of Catalonia’s earliest purpose-built constructions designed specifically for exhibiting collections to the public and fostering access to culture.
Originally comprised of two symmetrical wings – one housing the library and the other the museum – the architectural layout has evolved over time with successive expansions. Despite these modifications, the facade retains its appearance, reminiscent of a temple adorned with ornate elements inspired by Egyptian and Greek motifs.
The original collection comprised books and artistic objects amassed by the founder throughout his life, augmented by numerous donations that enriched it from the outset. The ground floor houses the historical library and rooms showcasing collections acquired during Balaguer’s lifetime, while the first floor exhibits artistic legacies that arrived in Vilanova i la Geltrú throughout the 20th century.
