Jaciment Font de la Canya

The protohistoric site of the Font de la Canya hill, located in the municipality of Avinyonet del Penedès, is a settlement of the Iberian Cossetanian tribe that was inhabited from the late seventh century BC (625-600 BC) until the third century BC, being abandoned with the arrival of the Roman armies.

Discovered in 1997, it has been subject to continuous archaeological excavations and archaeological-botanical studies that have revealed the role of this settlement as the cradle of wine-growing in Penedès.

Originally a large trading centre in the Iberian Cossetania, a remarkable range of material (ceramic, metal, Archaeobotanical, etc.) from different periods directly related to wine-growing and the consumption of wine has been discovered here. This compendium of findings provides information on the economy of Iberian culture and the trade with different Mediterranean cultures, such as the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians and Romans, which took place in the settlement.

The hundreds of charred and mineralized bones recovered in the archaeological excavations represent the oldest and most important collection on record in Catalonia today.

Visit this landmark of Catalan protohistoric archaeology and discover an outstanding area of cultural tourism and wine tourism in Penedès.
