Víctor's Secret. Penedès Border Castles

A land in process of organization and sparsely populated

In the 10th century, between a few Catalan villages and the emirate of Córdoba, there was a wide border strip, a land in the process of organization and sparsely populated.

Penedès Border Castles, such as Subirats, Olèrdola and Gelida, were built in the highest parts of the area. And what did these castles and some of the towers built in the Penedès region have in common? They were the border between the Saracens and the Catholics.

When the Saracens made their incursions by sea and land with the intention of attacking and assaulting the towns, these fortifications of the 10th century served to face them.

The castles were connected to each other through a torch

The Castles of Frontera de Penedès were connected to each other through a torch that they lit on the highest tower. In this way, when there was danger, information was passed from one castle to another, to warn the Castilian, who lived inland, so that he could prepare his troops to help repel the Saracen incursion.

The melee battles, the sound of swords, the shouts of the knights are no longer heard at the top of the mountains and hills of the Penedès, but the castles that can still be visited are witness to some chapters of the history that happened in our region.
